If you are considering starting a work from home data entry job, then this is the perfect article for you. A few things I am going to cover include the best places to find a data entry job, the required skills, expected income, etc.

Honestly before starting this blog online data entry is something that I considered heavily. I have always known that I was not the type to work a regular 9-5, I wanted to have the ability to work from home, or anywhere with an internet connection.

It is great as a side hustle or a potential career because unlike most work from home jobs the start up costs are actually quite low.

Let’s dig in! I am going to cover online data entry jobs you can do from home along with a couple other work from home jobs to consider.

What Is Data Entry

Data entry jobs are basic. You will be required to enter information onto a computer. How it works is you will be typing data into an online database, possibly a separate document or worksheet. These things can all be done online and at times offline.

Data entry is a very simple task for the most part, besides for fast speeds and accuracy typing. Data entry as a whole is probably something you have done before in one way or another.

Is A Work From Home Data Entry Job The Right Choice For You?

In order to do a data entry job you will have to be okay with and expect there to be a ton of repetition. Honestly, you should expect it to be quite boring.

Just remember it is an amazing place to start when looking for work at home jobs, data entry will help you gain confidence without having really any upfront costs or meeting a ton of requirements.

Don’t stress about it, give it a try. If you try and you hate it, there are many other work from home jobs you can try. There are even ways you can earn a bit extra money without having a job at all, for example survey sites.

How Much Can I Make With Data Entry Jobs?

Like I said before, you will not get rich or make millions from data entry, it just does not pay amazing, and you should not expect it to.

It is likely that you will only be earning minimum wage, unless you are planning on only going after higher paying jobs. We will cover a few of those below. Usually this is only for entry level/beginner level online data entry jobs.

From what I can determine the hourly average rate of pay is just shy of $14 per hour, however, this is generally just for work on site.

A Few Really Great Starter Level Data Entry Jobs

1. Scribie

Scribie is an excellent way to get started in the field of data entry by means of transcription. How it works is companies, and small business will submit audio to Scribie, from there freelance remote workers will transcribe it into written text.

Scribie is great because as a freelancer you have the ability to choose the jobs you would like to complete, this gives you the full freedom to decide how much you work, and when you work. Jobs at Scribie pay at least $5 per hour of audio, however some pay up to as high as $25 per audio hour.

To get started you will need to apply and complete a transcription test to see if you are a good fit. Other than that, you will not need any other special qualifications. You can apply here to Scribie

2. Flexjobs

Flexjobs is a very reputable, and well-known site for finding flexible, freelance jobs that you can do remotely. Data entry jobs are very popular on this platform making it easy for you to find jobs in data entry.

You will not have to sort through any scams or low paying job to find something worth doing, this is because all jobs on Flexjobs have been vetted by an actual person already. This one aspect makes browsing Flexjobs for your next opportunity a very good idea. You have the choice to choose between a $14.95/mo plan or longer term plans with lower monthly costs. As a BONUS to my readers you can get %off by using the code FUNANCIALS when you register.

3. Microworkers

Microworkers is much different than Flexjobs. For instance you will not find “jobs” on Microworkers. Instead you will find on the Microworkers site a list of short tasks that employers want completed.

Most tasks pay roughly a dollar, but the good news is that most tasks only take a couple minutes to complete. Many of the tasks are very basic and easy data entry tasks that don’t require you to have any training or skills. Basically, if you would like to make a few extra bucks, and have some time on your hands you should apply to Microworkers

4. SigTrack

SigTrack hires remote freelance workings to perform on simple task. For example, as simple task could be checking signatures on petitions against voter registration rolls. You will be paid based on your work abilities and productivity, this means there is no guarantee on pay. Your pay will vary from task to task.

However, this can be a good thing, because the faster you perform tasks the higher rate of pay you will receive. With SigTrack you can expect not to make very much to begin with but SigTrack does claim that most new workers will double or triple their speed within the first week. Meaning if you are feeling like you’re not making much to begin with, you should still stick it out.

You will be required to meet a few requirements to work for SigTrack. This is because SigTrack requires you to have access to confidential voter registration data, and to do so you HAVE to be a U.S. resident. You will also have to participate in a brief video interview so they can verify your identity before you start. Another requirement is that you will have to have access to dual monitors so you can view signatures and voter registration without having to switch screens, this is also a huge time saver.

You can check for job opportunities right here.

What Skills Should I Have For Data Entry Online Jobs

The skills needed really aren’t all that special because data entry jobs just aren’t as demanding as other work from home jobs out there. However there are a few required skills you should have down pat before beginning.

Knowledge of Computer Systems

It is very likely that you will be sent work/jobs in many different formats, because of this you should make sure tat you are capable of using some common formats such as: Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Google Sheets, Word, Google Docs, etc.

At times some jobs may also require you to have adequate knowledge running specific programs, just make sure you read all job listings before you apply carefully.

Computer Skills

Obviously you will be working on a computer so you will need to have a few basic skills. Meaning you will have to be able open all documents you are

Typing Skills

Many jobs you will be abling for will require that your typing meets a certain criteria. Generally all that means is they want to make sure that you are a fast and accurate typist. This is just so they can count on you for typing a certain amount of words per minute.

Organization Skills

This is very important because it is highly likely you will be attempting to sort out work that you have been hired to organize. This is why having the ability to organize and sort data into a more suitable and usable format will definitely have its advantages.

Oh, and working from home also requires a very high level of organization because you have to be responsible enough to manage your time all on your effectively. This is so important because you have to be able to meet strict deadlines.

Great Communication Skills

Good communication is always a great trait to have, but it becomes even more important when you are in the field of data entry. One of the very best qualities you can posses for a new employer is being able to communicate effectively.

This means if you do not understand or you need clarification on something then you will need to be willing to reach out for further clarification

The Equipment You Will Need For A Data Entry Job

You will not need a ton of overhead to get started in this line of work, which s great when just getting started with working at home. However, a few things you will need include:

  • A fast working computer
  • High speed internet
  • Dual Monitors – not every company will require this however, it does help with transferring documents. Check the job listing carefully.
  • Must have access to common. The more you have available to you when you start the easier it will be for you in the future.

How You Can Avoid Data Entry Job Scams

1. If They Say You Can Make A Lot Of Money (FYI it is too good to be true)

2. If an ad claims you can make thousands per week or an unimaginable amount of money don’t even give it the time of day. Data entry jobs pay okay but they are not going to make you rich, it’s simply not a high paying job. Any company making drastic monetary promises are likely a scam.

3. Brand New Website Without or Poorly Designed Website That Is Not Yet Proven

It is a known tactic for scammers to try and build up a website in an effort to look more legit, however you will know it is a scam because they won’t put a ton of effort into it. You will likely be able to tell if a website is legit just by looking at it and exploring around it.

4. You Should Not Have To Pay For A Job

There will be job offers out there that may ask you to pay a fee, sometimes they will say it is for your starting training. This is not normal and is a huge red flag. Do not fall for it!

For any legitimate online data entry jobs you will not have to pay anything upfront. However, remember it is okay and normal for some job sources to ask you to pay a small and reasonable fee to get in their database and remain there (some of the above job sources will require you to pay the mentioned fee).

Oh, and be careful regarding the scam going around asking you to deposit a check for business supplies in your personal account, this check is a fraud! This would never be asked of you from a legit company.

There a few other work from home jobs that you may be interested in checking out if you are having doubts about data entry. Also if you are looking for something a little more flexible than a data entry job there are a few well paying side hustles for you to consider as well.
